So far, the dragonflies we’ve seen (and identified) have been in just two categories: Darners and Skimmers. That leaves the following categories we’re still hoping to see: Petaltails, Clubtails, Spiketails, Cruisers, and Emeralds. (And here are our damselflies.)
I’ve identified some of these with the help of BugGuide.net and others with the help of Stokes’ Beginner’s Guide to Dragonflies.
Common green darner (Anax junius)
This is a female.
Shadow darner (Aeshna umbrosa)
This is the female.
Beautiful wings!
Black-tipped darner – female (Aeshna tuberculifera)
This is the female laying eggs.
Swamp darner (Epiaeschna heros)
Without the help of BugGuide.net, I would never have guessed this was a different species than the other dragonflies!
