Nectar for birds

Hummingbird nectaring on a jewelweed

In our yard,  hummingbirds find nectar in a variety of native plants.

Cardinal lobelia (pictured in the intro photo above) and jewelweeds (pictured here) are favorites, but they also like monardas, coral honeysuckle, black cohosh, trumpet vine, and others, too.

Yellow-bellied sapsucker

Sap could also fall into the nectar category. I don’t often see birds such as the yellow-bellied sapsucker in our yard in CNY, though we’ve seen them quite frequently when visiting our kids in North Carolina.

Oriole in a redbud tree

Orioles also are said to like nectar, but during their annual one or two day visit each year, I have never noticed them nectaring at any of our flowers.

Reflections

I value my garden more for being full of blackbirds than of cherries, and very frankly give them fruit for their songs.
